Ahmed Al-Ahmar: The "Captor" Who Conquered Handball Across Continents
Al-Ahmar is Egypt's all-time top scorer in both the World Championship and the Olympics.
Ahmed Mustafa Nasr Al-Ahmar was born on January 27th, 1984, in Giza — a city famed for its ancient pyramids and rich history. He grew up in an urban Egyptian household near the banks of the Nile, a setting that would shape the early years of one of handball's greatest careers.
Discovering the game:
Al-Ahmar's introduction to handball came through local youth programs and school activities in his neighbourhood. The most formative influence, however, was his father — Mustafa Al-Ahmar, a legendary figure in Egyptian handball nicknamed "Captain Egypt" for his achievements with Zamalek and the national team. Following in his father's footsteps, Ahmed picked up the sport at a young age and has consistently credited his father as the reason he ever played at all. A natural left-hander, he developed into a right-back — a position that allowed him to make full use of his powerful throwing arm. He cut his teeth in youth and junior tournaments in the late 1990s and early 2000s before eventually breaking into senior competition.
Club career:
Zamalek (2004–2012)
Al-Ahmar launched his professional career at Zamalek in 2004, rising from the youth ranks to become a first-team regular in short order. Playing at right-back, his left-handed shooting quickly made him one of the most dangerous weapons in Egyptian club handball.
Over the next eight years, he was central to Zamalek's domestic dominance — helping the club win the Egyptian League and the Egyptian Cup as part of a haul of 13 local titles during his stint. By the late 2000s, he was regularly among the team's top scorers in league play and delivered crucial performances in Cairo derbies against rivals Al-Ahly. By 2010, he had established himself as one of the sport's brightest global names, finishing the Super Globe with 41 goals and helping Zamalek to third place.
Al-Ahly Jeddah (Saudi Arabia)
Before his move to Qatar, Al-Ahmar had an early professional spell with Saudi club Al-Ahly Jeddah, where he contributed to the team's Asian Club Championship title.
Al-Jaish Qatar & European Foray (2012–2015)
In 2012, Al-Ahmar moved to Qatari club Al-Jaish. Over three seasons, he helped the club win the Asian Club Championship in 2013, defeating Al-Rayyan 35–27 in the final, then defended the title in 2014 with a 33–30 victory over Lekhwiya. He also lifted the Emir's Cup in Qatar in 2014 and qualified for the Super Globe.
In February 2015, he joined German club Flensburg on loan, competing in the Bundesliga and the EHF Champions League. His time in Germany culminated in a fairytale moment: on May 10, 2015, Flensburg won the German Cup — making Al-Ahmar the first player in history to win club titles on three separate continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Al-Africain (Tunisia – Loan, 2014)
Sandwiched within his Qatar period, Al-Ahmar had a brief loan spell with Tunisian club Al-Africain, where he helped them win the African Champions League.
Return to Zamalek (2015–Present)
Al-Ahmar returned to Zamalek in July 2015, signing a two-year deal and being handed the captain's armband. The second chapter proved every bit as decorated as the first. He led the club to Egyptian League titles in 2015–16, 2018–19, 2020–21, and 2022, along with four African Champions League crowns in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019, plus multiple other continental honors — cementing Zamalek's era of African dominance. He renewed his contract in 2019 and continued leading the club through Super Globe campaigns and continental competition. He also had loan stints with Saudi club Al-Khaleej in 2022 and Bahraini club Al-Nejmah in 2023.
