The Arab world had plenty to celebrate at Taranto 2026, with athletes from across the region bringing home 139 medals over two weeks of competition.
From Egypt’s record-breaking haul to Lebanon ending a 35-year wait for gold, the 20th Mediterranean Games delivered plenty of reasons to celebrate. But beyond the medal table, it was the moments themselves that gave these Games their character.

Egypt Beat Seed N.1 Spain in Men's Padel in a Groundbreaking Round of 16
Padel was making its debut at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, bringing some of the world's top players into the competition for the first time.
And on just the third day, Egypt produced one of the biggest shocks of the tournament.
Egypt’s Youssef Hossam and Georges Wakim were up against Spain’s Pol Hernandez and Guille Collado, the No. 1 seeds in the men’s draw. Hernandez was ranked No. 35 in the FIP world rankings and Collado No. 37 when the tournament began, and the Spanish pair had been identified as the team to beat.
The Egyptians did not just beat them; they survived a two-hour thriller.
Hossam and Wakim took the opening set 6–4, but Spain fought back to win the second 6–4 and force a deciding set.
At 5–4 down in that final set, Egypt faced match point.
They saved it.
Then they broke Spain and closed out the match 7–5 to complete a 6–4, 4–6, 7–5 victory and book their place in the quarterfinals.
Hana Goda Becomes the Youngest Mediterranean Games Table Tennis Champion
At just 18, Hana Goda made Mediterranean Games history in Taranto, becoming the youngest player ever to win table tennis gold at the Games.
The Egyptian teenager defeated Xiaoxin Yang 4–1 in the women’s singles final, taking control of the match and adding another major title to a career already packed with milestones.
Goda also claimed mixed doubles silver alongside Omar Assar, but the singles title was the headline.
Feryal Ashraf Fought Through Facial Injury for Gold
Feryal Ashraf’s Taranto gold came with a moment that made the medal even more memorable.
The Egyptian Olympic champion defeated Italy’s Silvia Semeraro 2–0 in the women’s -68kg karate final, despite suffering a facial injury during the bout.
She stayed in the fight, finished the job and left Taranto with another major title.
Taha Tarek Had 8 Seconds on the Clock to Win Gold
Down 3–1 in the men’s +84kg karate final, Taha Tarek had just eight seconds left.
He scored three points.
The Egyptian turned the deficit into a 4–3 victory and snatched gold in one of Taranto’s most dramatic finishes.
Eight seconds, three points, one gold medal.
Samar Hamza Celebrates Motherhood with her Gold
Samar Hamza’s 5–3 victory over Turkey’s Kadriye Koçak secured the women’s 76kg wrestling gold.
After stepping away from elite competition to become a mother, Hamza returned to the sport and continued her pursuit of the highest level.
So, when she finally secured the gold in Taranto, the celebration carried years of work and an entire comeback behind it.
Samer Sarkis Ended Lebanon’s 35-Year Wait for Gold
Lebanon had been waiting since 1991 for another Mediterranean Games gold medal.
Samer Sarkis finally ended that wait in Taranto.
The Lebanese shooter won the men’s skeet title, putting his country back on top of the Mediterranean Games podium for the first time in 35 years.
After more than three decades without a gold, Sarkis turned one shooting final into a piece of Lebanese sporting history.
Kaylia Neymour got the highest score in Gymnastics for 2026
Kaylia Nemour did more than win Algeria’s women’s artistic gymnastics all-around title.
Her score of 57.750 was the highest senior women’s all-around total recorded anywhere in the world in 2026 at the time.
Nemour finished almost five points ahead of Spain’s Alba Petisco, who took silver with 52.850, after putting together scores of 13.800 on vault, 15.650 on uneven bars, 14.700 on balance beam and 13.600 on floor.
And she was not finished.
Nemour went on to win gold on uneven bars and balance beam, finishing Taranto with three individual titles. Her 15.650 on bars was also a 2026 high for the apparatus at the time.
