Iraq’s qualification to the 2026 World Cup on April 1st following their historic 2–1 victory over Bolivia, ending a 40-year absence, was more than just a sporting achievement—it was the embodiment of a “story of a promise.” As soon as the final whistle blew, Ayman Hussein, the Lions of Mesopotamia striker who scored the decisive goal, shared a video on Instagram from a 2017 TV interview in which he had promised to lead his country to the World Cup. He captioned it with words that stirred fans’ emotions: “An Iraqi keeps his promises… and when he rises, he shakes the ground beneath despair,” dedicating the victory to the Iraqi people and to the souls of the fallen martyrs. The draw has placed Iraq in a tough Group I alongside France, Norway and Senegal. Despite the difficulty of the challenge that will play out in the stadiums of the United States, Canada and Mexico in the summer of 2026, Ayman Hussein and his generation have kept their promise—and written history.

Who is Ayman Hussein? Hussein's journey to glory was far from easy. He endured a harsh childhood after losing his father in 2008, and began his career in third-division clubs in the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq. He continued his football journey by joining Gas Al-Shamal Club, then Duhok, steadily building a strong reputation within Iraq. He currently plays for Al-Karma Club. However, between 2017 and 2019, Hussein's performance drew sharp criticism and resulted in recurring professional setbacks—but he remained resilient. When he suffered a chest haemorrhage during a match against Oman in 2024, he returned from the surgery with the determination to fight for his team and secure their spot in the World Cup. With the national team, Ayman Hussein has made 89 appearances across competitions, scoring 32 goals.
