Everything We Know About Mohamed Salah’s New Club Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor is based in Trabzon, a city in northeastern Türkiye on the shores of the Black Sea. The club plays its home matches at Papara Park, where it regularly draws some of the most passionate supporters in Turkish football.

Beyond the stadium, Trabzon is known for its lush landscapes, mountainous terrain and forests, as well as landmarks including the famous Uzungöl and historic Sumela Monastery. Football, however, remains at the heart of the city’s identity, with Trabzonspor serving as a symbol of pride for the city and the wider Black Sea region.

Founded in 1967, Trabzonspor quickly rose through the ranks of Turkish football to become one of the country’s most successful clubs.

More significantly, it became the first club from outside Istanbul to break the longstanding dominance of Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş in the Turkish top flight — a milestone that cemented Trabzonspor’s place in the country’s football history.

Its most recent league triumph came in the 2021–22 season, when Trabzonspor ended a 38-year wait for the Turkish championship.

While Trabzonspor has built an impressive domestic trophy cabinet, European silverware has remained elusive.

The club’s strongest continental runs include three appearances in the Round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League under its previous format. Trabzonspor has also featured in the UEFA Champions League on several occasions.

One of its most memorable European nights came during the 2011–12 Champions League group stage, when Trabzonspor stunned Italian giants Inter Milan with a 1–0 victory at San Siro.

Trabzonspor finished the 2025–26 Turkish Süper Lig season in third place, behind champions Galatasaray and runners-up Fenerbahçe.

The result secured the club a place in the Europa League play-off round, giving Salah the opportunity to compete in European football should Trabzonspor successfully navigate the qualification stage.

Salah is not the first Egyptian to represent Trabzonspor. He becomes the fourth Egyptian player to wear the club’s colours, following Ayman Abdel Aziz, who became the first Egyptian to join the club in 2007–08, and Sayed Moawad, who spent a brief spell there in 2008. Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet followed in 2022, becoming the most successful Egyptian to represent Trabzonspor after scoring 25 goals and helping the club lift the Turkish Cup in 2024.

Now, Salah arrives with a considerably larger global profile — and the expectations that come with it.

Trabzonspor has also welcomed several prominent Arab footballers over the years, including Moroccan stars Youssef El-Arabi, Marouane Chamakh and Nordin Amrabat, as well as Tunisian defender Aymen Abdennour. Their spells at the club add to Trabzonspor’s long history of attracting talent from across the Arab world.

Salah will join a squad featuring several names familiar to international football fans. Among them are André Onana, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, experienced defender Stefan Savić, who previously played for Atlético Madrid and Manchester City, and Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, who finished as the club’s leading scorer last season.

The arrival of Salah adds another major name to the squad, bringing not only his experience at the highest level of European football but also a new attacking dimension to the team.

Long before Salah arrived, Hami Mandıralı established himself as one of the defining figures in Trabzonspor’s history. The former Turkish international holds the club’s all-time scoring record, having scored 273 goals across all competitions, cementing his status as one of Trabzonspor’s greatest legends and one of the most prolific players in Turkish football.

For Salah, the move to Trabzonspor represents more than a change of league. It marks the beginning of a new footballing environment, a new fanbase and a new challenge for a player who has already built one of the most decorated careers in modern Egyptian football.

Now, at one of Türkiye’s most storied clubs outside Istanbul, Salah will look to add another chapter to his legacy — this time in the colours of Trabzonspor.
